WHQ, 34 AMBO STREET, CALABARREPORT OF 2008 SINGING/GRADING EXERCISE
In the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ
In the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ
Now and forever more, Amen
GENERAL COMMENTS
Having successfully completed the singing and grading exercise for 2008 in Zone 1-7, we are therefore thankful to the Holy Father for his abundant grace, ability and guidance through out the exercise.
PARTICIPATION: We thank the Father for the number of choirs from these regions that participated in the exercise. Though there are some choirs that are still yet to see participation in singing exercises as a requirement to remain a standard choir in Brotherhood. On this note, relegation of non - participating choirs may be considered shortly. A total of 169 choirs participated in this year’s grading exercise; 147 adult choirs and 22 sabbath choirs.
DRESSING: The Holy Father had approved a standardized chorister’s dress code which is unisex for both brothers and sister choristers. The use of other designed soutane especially by female choristers attracts loss of marks. Neatness and uniformity should be encouraged.
CONDUCTING: Conductors should be conscious of the length, size and color of their conducting batons or staffs. Correct baton grip, flexibility, time signatures, etc. constitutes the act of conducting. Please refer to your choristers’ manual for guidance.
BEAT VALUES: Choirmasters are advised to differentiate between triplet and quadruplet beats and interpret as written.
TEMPO: Musical speed is a defined time in ranges. This is ascertained by the use of musical timing instrument known as metronome. Continuous practices will improve your timing techniques.
DICTION: Some words may not be pronounced the way it is spelt. Use the dictionary to ascertain the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. The last consonant of a word is very necessary for words’ tenses, meaning and values.
FACIAL / VOCAL EXPRESSION: Singers should learn to maintain a friendly countenance while singing even at very high notes/ pitches (upper scale/octave). A joyful song should also be expressed facially.
MODIFICATION OF GRADING EXERCISE
With particular reference to the Father’s guide lines on choir grading exercise, it is important to note the following;
(1) That choirs be assessed base on their performance / functionality at bethels,
zones, areas, states, etc and
(2) Final singing/grading exercise.
Accordingly the grading system shall be 40% for continuous assessment and 60% for the final grading exercise. This means that any choir group that fail to submit their continuous assessment will lose 40% on the final grading exercise. It is therefore important for the various groups to submit their continuous assessment promptly. It should be noted particularly that this grading exercise is once a year and runs for two years and at the end the average score shall be considered for promotion.
